A Seatides resident along with numerous emergency rescue services are being hailed as heroes today after the brave and daring rescue of a woman who had lost control of her vehicle, and landed upside down in the Tongaat River.

She drove off a gap in the railings of the bridge.

A paramedic and Thrivin Naidoo help the woman to shore.

Former North Coast Courier journalist Thrivin Naidoo, was driving past and had intended to take photos of the sunrise when he noticed the SUV in the water.

He immediately reached out to rescue services.

“I ran down to the river and jumped in, swimming to the car while shouting out if anyone could hear me,” said Naidoo, adding that a woman – now identified as a local Zimbali resident – shouted back.

Naidoo said attempting to get access to the vehicle proved difficult with the water pressure building in the car.

When he got into the vehicle he found the woman in the back.

By this time, a paramedic had arrived and came to assist Naidoo with the rescue.

The woman, Sue Marsden, was treated at the scene before being transported to Netcare Alberlito hospital for further care.

It is understood that she is in a stable condition.

Naidoo is also a qualified rescue medic who works with the Community Emergency Rescue Team (CERT) on a voluntary basis.
