Health research employees killed at Tongaat toll plaza while changing tyre
Hlobisile Chonco and Zanele Msane were changing the tyre in the emergency lane when a Hyundai i20 crashed into their vehicle.
Two African Health Research Institute (AHRI) employees were killed while changing a tyre on their car by the Tongaat Toll Plaza on Sunday.
Hlobisile Chonco (32) and Zanele Msane (41) had a puncture on their VW Polo and were in the process of changing the tyre in the emergency lane when a Hyundai i20 crashed into their vehicle.
It is alleged that the driver of the Hyundai i20 was drunk. He was arrested by police.
Tongaat police spokesperson captain Captain Patrick Ngwane said the 30-year-old man was charged with culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless and negligence driving.

“Both Zanele and Hlobisile were much-loved colleagues, and AHRI staff are devastated by this loss.
“AHRI sends its sincere condolences to their families and loved ones,” said Professor Hanekom.
