Tongaat officer’s death not linked to Bobo, says police

The body of a lieutenant-colonel, unidentified at this stage, was found in his car with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police have refuted speculation that a Tongaat police officer, who recently committed suicide, had been involved in the murder of Hambanathi teen, Andile “Bobo” Mchunu.

This comes after social media reports alleged that the police officer killed himself after he was arrested for allegedly helping the seven men hide Bobo’s body.

Bobo was allegedly killed for stealing alcohol from a tavern in Hambanathi Township.

A video of him being assaulted that was shared on social media caused shock across the country.

Seven people were taken in for questioning and a body believed to be his was found in a river last week.

Residents of Hambanathi then protested and set the tavern alight.

The body of a lieutenant-colonel, unidentified at this stage, was found in his car last Thursday with a gunshot wound to the head.

“An inquest docket has been opened for investigation by Verulam SAPS after the body of a 49-year-old man was found inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head at Tea Estate,” said provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker.

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated and no foul play was suspected.

“There is no evidence at this stage confirming a link between the two cases. Anyone with information that can assist detectives in both investigations is requested to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” said Brigadier Jay Naicker.
