Live: High hopes for changes to alcohol and beach bans at President’s ‘family meeting’ tonight

Speculation has been rife on social media with claims of changes looming to the sale and serving of alcohol, coupled with changes to the nationwide curfew.

 

The Presidency’s office announced today that president Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation this evening at 8pm.

Meanwhile SA Breweries and a non-profit company representing 3 500 South African wine producers – Vinpro – may turn to the Western Cape High Court should the ban not be lifted.

Further changes may include the reopening of parks and beaches countrywide. 

The national address this evening follows a number of meetings between the National Coronavirus Command Council, the President’s Coordinating Council and Cabinet.

On Jan 22 health minister Zweli Mkhize acknowledged the decline in daily Covid-19 infections, saying their was ‘promising evidence’ that the second wave on the decline.
