Microlight crash claims pilot and passenger in Ballito

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

A microlight aircraft crash near Ballito Microlights airfield claimed the lives of two people Wednesday morning.

The pilot, Air Mauritius captain Alan Slade and his passenger, Leon Meiring, a 46-year-old father of 4, died when the microlight crashed about 500 metres from the landing strip. Meiring had been visiting the area with his family from Mpumalanga.

A reliable source said the microlight took off from the small airfield situated near Holla Trails, at 8am and was expected back at around 8.30am.

When the plane failed to return on time King Shaka Air Control was called and it was discovered the plane had flown out of range.

The wreckage of the microlight aircraft was discovered almost half a kilometre outside the landing field after another microlight went out to search for them.

The cause of the accident is unknown and will be the subject of an investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
