Tongaat man turns heads with ‘not for sale’ Subaru

While he does not drive it every day, at least once a week he takes out his souped-up Subaru to treat his daughters to a drive to school, or perhaps to get ice-cream, in style.

The attention-demanding roar of his modified Subaru Impreza has attracted countless offers from car fanatics for owner Sugen Reddy, all of which he has turned down.

The Tongaat resident bought the car 5 years ago and said he has spent about R100 000 modifying it.

His improvements included new headlights, grill, intercooler and turbo. He has also added the tilt and slide sunroof, STi boot spoiler, front bumper lip, carbon fibre, mirror covers, cold air induction and 18 inch rims.

Addicted to working on his car, Reddy next added a power brake upgrade with bc racing coil-overs and a Mishimoto radiator and a teal wastegate.

“I like this car and I just cannot get rid of it. Maybe it is because my children like it even more than I do.”

While he does not drive it every day, at least once a week he takes out his souped-up Subaru to treat his daughters to a drive to school, or perhaps to get ice-cream, in style.

For Reddy it is all about the experience of driving his pride and joy.

“This is my toy, man. I mean when I hear the sound of the exhaust when I press the accelerator. . .”

With a laugh, Reddy relates how he has been wrongfully accused of speeding because of the sound it makes.

“I do not speed because Tongaat streets are busy. But the sound makes you think that I am travelling at 200km while I am only going 60km. It gives me joy, you know.”

The Subaru has not visited a car show yet, but Reddy says he is more interested in enjoying the vehicle than showing it off.
