Call for fresh volunteers to protect Ballito
Volunteers at checkpoints have been standing guard for up to 20 hours at a time.
It has been 10 days since protest action with the goal of seeing former president, Jacob Zuma released from prison turned violent, leading to large-scale riots and looting.
Thanks to the combined efforts and swift action of the greater Ballito community, infrastructure remains in tact from Ballito through to Salt Rock, where people from across the North and South Coast have been able to get essential items.
Already The Courier has heard of how grateful shoppers are for the efforts displayed by locals, Saps and security companies, which on day 2 of shops having reopened saw many desperate shoppers being able to get what they needed.
Mags Westerhof of the Greater Ballito Operations Committee, said checkpoints still needed a consistently strong showing throughout the weekend.
“We are still getting reports of sporadic veld and cane fires and other such activities.
“It is our continued presence at our key entry points that has kept any criminal elements at bay thus far, but we are by no means out of the woods.”
Volunteers are especially required today and Sunday, as well as evening shifts.
