Launch of renovated Capital Zimbali Hotel announced, will target local leisure market

CEO Cobus Oelofse said the closure of the Fairmont Zimbali was a symbol of the impact of the pandemic on the regional economy.

The former Fairmont Zimbali hotel is to be relaunched as the Capital Zimbali next month after an extensive upgrade.

The 5-star hotel, which went into business rescue last year, then closed at a cost of 220 jobs, was bought earlier this year by the Capital Hotel Group for R240 million.

Capital Hotel Group managing director Marc Wachsberger said the company had invested some R30-million into an extensive renovation and refurbishment project which includes transforming suites into flexible apartment-style accommodation.

The deal will result in the creation of 143 jobs.

The Capital Zimbali will be targeted toward the local leisure market.

The first function at the refurbished hotel will be the annual dinner of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, in partnership with Nedbank who is the platinum sponsor of the event.

CEO Cobus Oelofse said the closure of the Fairmont Zimbali was a symbol of the impact of the pandemic on the regional economy.

“Its acquisition by the Capital Group mirrors the resilience and appeal that we would like our iLembe economy to be known for.”

Tickets for the dinner on November 18 are available at 087 354 6343 or email to ntombifuthi@ilembechamber.co.za.
