Ballito businessman Ryan Cowan who is charged with assaulting his estranged wife, briefly appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 29.

The case against Cowan (40) was remanded to December 9 in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court.

Cowan, who faces charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and the contravention of a protection order is alleged to have kidnapped his estranged wife, Mystrelle, on May 4 this year before assaulting her.

She was found by her family and admitted to hospital with severe injuries.

Cowan handed himself over to police at Umhlali on May 10, and made several court appearance before bail was granted at R10 000.

On several occasions protestors gathered outside of the court to protest Cowan’s bail application.

Previously the court heard that Cowan had been arrested on 2 prior convictions and had been released on R2 000 bail – these cases involved assault and grievous bodily harm to his wife, including the contravention of a protection order, both still pending.

He remains out on bail.
