KwaCele Farming Trust farmer’s day plants seeds of success in 50 upcoming farmers and agri students

About 50 upcoming farmers and agricultural students received a mine of valuable information at the KwaCele Farming Trust’s farmers day in Maphumulo last Wednesday.

The focus was on unpacking the intricate stages of macadamia farming and beekeeping, since the two sectors have a critical symbiotic connection with each other.

Macadamia master Sanele Ngcobo took the students and farmers to the fields and demonstrated how to conduct soil classification, while Senzo Nene spoke about the use of chemicals.

“It is important to specialise in one sector of farming. I believe it is counter-productive to be a jack of all trades and master of none. So it is vital that we work together as small farmers,” said Ngcobo.

Farming trust founding member, Themba Nzuza, said after their successful 2 800 hectare farm claim they prioritised investing in training young people to succeed in agriculture.

He cited farm manager Sabelo Nyaba as a good example.

“We identified a local young boy who loved agriculture and paid for his education. He returned to work on the farm and developed into a top class manager.

“I am a teacher by profession, but after our claim was successful I decided to come and run the farm. I did not know anything about farming and we had to bring in qualified people,” said Nzunza.

The attending farmers and students said they found the workshop invaluable and hoped to be invited for training again soon.
