Scrapheap cats need a loving home

Less than 5 minutes out of Ballito lives a family of feral cats, the kings and queens of the scrapheap.

When Manor Estates resident Lisa Smith went to vote at the Compensation Trading Store on November 1, she heard a chorus of soft meows.

“They were very skittish, but I could clearly see at least 2 cats that looked like they had never had any love,” Smith said.

Over the past few weeks, Lisa has been returning to the site to feed the cats and to provide them with some loving care. There are 4 adult and adolescent cats, with another 3 kittens. One of the adolescents is also pregnant and is due to give birth shortly.

“They run up to me and I can pet 2 of them and tickle the one’s head, they sincerely deserve a chance.”

Priya Bholai, who works at nearby RSN Steel, has also been helping feed the cats.

“The 2 older cats do not get close, they have clearly been living in the wild for a long time. The 2 younger ones, Ginger and Garlic, are very friendly though,” said Priya.

Both Lisa and Priya have been trying to find a safe haven for the cats, but most animal welfare organisations simply do not have available capacity.

“The Feral Feline Fund offered to help out with vaccinations, so we really just need someone who is willing to provide a home,” said Lisa.

Aside from the daily threats the cats face, the entire area is going to be bulldozed early next year for development, leaving them with even less of a home than they now have.
