Evacuated Ballito Junction returns to service after fire disrupts mall
Shops were forced to shut their doors as a safety precaution, with staff evacuating from the mall as the mall's alarm system blared.
Emergency fire crews from the KwaDukuza fire department rushed to Ballito Junction Regional Mall within 5 minutes of being notified of an electrical fire.
The fire broke out shortly after 8am this morning at the mall’s basement delivery area for Edgars.
Shops were forced to shut their doors as a safety precaution, with staff evacuating from the mall as the mall’s alarm system blared.
Mall operations manager, Ken Davidson said they had to isolate electrical systems prior to fire teams being able to extinguish the fire, but that their automated fire detection systems had started in the meantime.
Smoke extraction units aided in removing a build up of smoke.
“We are happy to report that nobody was injured and thank the fire department for their swift response,” Davidson said.
