Nutcracker calls in Umhlali mice

Four pupils from the Umhlali-based Celia Davis School of Ballet have been given the exciting chance of playing the little mice in Joburg Ballet’s enchanting new production of The Nutcracker, coming to the Playhouse in Durban.

The Nutcracker is a popular Christmas ballet classic which promises to transport the audience into a Christmas fairy tale where toys come to life, mice wage war, snowflakes delight, sweets dance and Clara meets her Nutcracker Prince.

Booked for December 18 and 19, the production will be made all the more special with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score performed by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lykele Temmingh.

A classical ballet in 2 acts, The Nutcracker was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa.

This new version is produced and choreographed by Joburg Ballet’s artistic director, Iain MacDonald.

Celia Davis of the ballet school in Umhlali said she was delighted her pupils would be afforded the opportunity to play the role of mice.

“It is a great opportunity and certainly opens doors for them going forward,” she said.

Tickets at R120pp can be bought at webtickets.co.za, with shows set for 18 December at 2pm and 6pm, and on 19 December for 2pm.
