Mayor’s Facebook money plea a scam
Mayor Shandu is currently taking legal action to ensure the matter is addressed.
iLembe District Municipality mayor, councillor Thobani Shandu, is the latest victim of Facebook account cloning, with reports that he has taken to the social media platform to solicit financial donations.
Municipal communications officer, Zee Nqala, said Facebook users should note the difference between the two accounts, saying the correct user account is named ‘Thobani Philani Shandu’, and not ‘Thobani Philan Shandu’.
“The duplicated account will either upload a picture or status, and when people respond a WhatsApp number is sent and once contacted, scammers request money to be sent to the number 073 183 2530,” said Nqala.
“The scammers also use the number 078 966 6888. Mayor Shandu is taking legal action to ensure the matter is addressed.”
In the meantime, mayor Shandu has urged friends, family and the public at large to report this fake account and alert Facebook to take necessary action.
