Obituary: Verity Patricia Jackson will be fondly remembered
Trish had many different careers, including co-owning the Umhlali Tattersalls with first Bruce MacDonald and later the Legassic family.
Former Umhlali Tattersalls co-owner, Verity Patricia Jackson, nee Brennan, passed away last week Tuesday.
Her daughter, Cathy Walder, said her mother was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a dedicated friend.
Trish was born to Mr and Mrs Michael Brennan in Bloemfontein in 1937, the youngest of three children.
“Her father was a doctor and her mother a nurse. She attended a Catholic convent in Bloemfontein until matric in 1952, after which she followed her passion for modelling and went to London to work for Gozzards where she received training in corsetry and lingerie,” said Walder.
“Apart from fashion, my mother was also passionate about rugby, which led to a meeting and eventual marriage to Fintan Patrick Jackson, a prop forward playing for the then Natal rugby team.
“They were not able to have children of their own and adopted me in 1974. They loved their life here on the North Coast and were well-loved members of the Dolphin Coast community.”
Trish had many different careers throughout her life. She part-owned the Umhlali Tattersalls with first Bruce MacDonald and later the Legassic family.
She then worked as a personal assistant to Peter Matckovitch at Matckovitch and Hayes Golf Course Architects, where she spent many happy years.
“The highlight of her career was going to Leopard Rock and seeing Princess Diana. I will never forget her excitement about it,” Walder said.
Walder was a dedicated horse rider and remembers her mother saving a runaway horse galloping down the R102.
“She drove up alongside her and stuck her arm out the window, grabbing her bridle and slowly and carefully brought her down to calmness. In the process she had bruised her entire arm and broken her fingers. She was black and blue for days, but happy she had saved a life.”
After her husband passed away in June 1998, Trish retired to Midmar Gardens in Howick before falling ill in December.
“She will be greatly missed by many but deeply missed by myself and her dearest grandchildren who loved her so very much.”
