KwaDukuza’s crime-plagued Lloyd township goes private with security

KwaDukuza’s Lloyd township residents are preparing to stand up against crime by hiring a private security company to guard their township.

The resolution was taken at a community meeting at the Lloyd community hall on Sunday.

Ward 14 councillor Njabulo Mntambo said while they were still busy investigating how they would pay for the service, residents have agreed to take on night patrols in the interim and began duty on Monday.

“It is time that we put an end to crime in our community. Criminals have been terrorising residents for too long, and the recent gang rape of 3 women made me realise that I had to call this meeting so that we can come up with a solution,” said Mntambo.

Another incident that shook the community last week was the attempted rape of children in 2 different houses.

“We had 5 break-ins in 1 night on the same street. That tells you these criminals are doing as they please and we have to step up and put a stop to this.”

During the meeting – attended by KwaDukuza Saps station commander Brigadier Sibongile Mhlongo – residents said they had lost confidence and trust in the police.

They accused the police of working with criminals and not following up on cases.

Mhlongo, accompanied by his detective and visible policing commanders, asked those with queries to speak with them then and there for updates on their cases, but of the 5 people who complained, only 2 came forward.

“We have a serious issue of people opening cases or witnessing crime, but when it comes to coming forward, they disappear,” Mhlongo said.

“I will follow up on the accusations of corrupt officers taking bribes from drug dealers, but you cannot stand up and make such allegations and then back off. I need you to work with me and provide whatever proof you have,” she said.
