First-time little ballerinas show and shine

Giving youngsters an introduction into the arts is just a plié away at Shakaskraal SA Primary, where ballet lessons have had an instant impact.

A new programme by Ballito resident Gail Stefano, who has been a long-time supporter of the school, sees Grade 1 girls getting a taste of ballet with one lesson a week.

“We had almost finished rebuilding the library when I realised the new space could work well as a makeshift dance studio,” said Stefano.

“There are unfortunately not many cultural programmes in schools that lack funding, so we thought it was important to try and give these girls an opportunity to dance with instruction.”

The 56 Grade 1 girls are split into 2 groups, each receiving 1 lesson a week from Royal Academy of Ballet qualified instructor, Caroline Brymer.

Last week saw the first lessons and the enjoyment was palpable, with smiles permanently painted across the faces of the children.

“I have taught ballet all around the country, which included both competitive and cabaret work. After closing my business during the Covid pandemic, I jumped at the opportunity to teach these girls,” said Brymer.

Although the early classes are very introductory, Brymer hopes that by the end of the year the students will be able to dance together in a show for their parents.

“I feel very strongly about teaching young girls to dance. Learning how to control one’s body and have discipline will stand them in good stead whether they continue to dance or not,” she said.

A history of instruction also means that Brymer has an eye for talent, and who knows, perhaps the next Misty Copeland is waiting to be discovered in Shakaskraal.

If you would like to support the programme, you can by donating leotards and ballet shoes that will be suitable for Grade 1 girls.

At the moment there are just enough leotards but very few shoes for the dancers, and any donation would be hugely appreciated, said Stefano.
