Flood update: M4 closed between Ballito and Westbrook, power remains off

Residents are still urged to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Another night of torrential rain has placed severe pressure on public and private infrastructure on the North Coast.

Millions in damages have been caused in almost every main area from Umdloti to Zinkwazi, with multiple informal settlements on flooding riverbanks being evacuated.

Power remains out in much of Ballito as access to the Driefontein substation has been cut off owing to a washed away bridge near Tongaat.

Driefontein and the Shakaskraal substation both supply Ballito with electricity, but it is currently unknown whether the Shakaskraal substation has also been affected.

An inspection is under way on site by KwaDukuza Municipal workers.

The bridge crossing the Tongaat River on the M4 looks set for imminent partial collapse – the road is closed until it can be repaired.

In Umdloti, water has also been cut off since around 2am last night.

Travel routes are still severely impacted, with the M4 closed between Ballito and Westbrook as the bridge crossing the Tongaat River looks set for partial collapse.

The N2 northbound at the Tongaat River has also been affected after a truck overturned and became stuck in a mudslide. Partial passage is possible in the outer lane.

The Umhlali River bridge on the N2 this morning, where water briefly reached the level of the road last night.

At multiple locations, the R102 between Umhlali and KwaDukuza remains impassable, with much of Shakaskraal flooded after the Umhlali River burst its banks.

The N2 is clear southbound but still blocked northbound at the Umhlali River bridge, traffic is being allowed in both directions using one lane each.

The KwaDukuza CBD remains flooded as do many of the surrounding communities, with damage reported in Gledhow, Groutville and Glen Hills.

Tongaat has seen similar issues, with mud piled high along the main roads. Travel is possible, but with closures on the M4, traffic is heavily affected.

The main circle in Umdloti between South and North Beach roads has a massive sinkhole, possibly the cause of the town’s water issues.

This all aside from the hundreds of homes damaged and families evacuated at multiple locations.

Residents are still urged to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. Further updates will be provided once received.
