Grandmother and grandchildren perish in flooded river

The car the family were traveling in was washed off the road by a river in flood.

A Flamingo Heights woman and her three grandchildren were found dead after the vehicle they were travelling in was washed away in Tongaat last night.

Rescue teams and the Saps K9 unit found the woman and the two girls this morning and the third girl was found this afternoon.

It is believed the grandmother was on her way home after fetching her grandchildren from her daughter’s house, which was flooded in Buffelsdale.

Rescue teams searching for the third grandchild.

“She attempted to cross a flooded road. Unfortunately, the strong water currant pulled the vehicle into the river. The search had to be called off because of bad weather conditions and unsafe conditions last night.

“Early this morning the car and deceased occupants were found,” said Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) media liaison officer, Riza Sadack.
