Strong women lead the way in North Coast’s Red Movement
In South Africa, three in 10 girls (3.7 million) miss a week of school every month (60/200 days in a year) because they cannot afford menstrual products.
Influential women from all walks of life are taking up the call to end period poverty for schoolgirls.
The who’s who of health, beauty and thought-leaders of the North Coast were at the launch of ‘The Red Movement’, now in its second year, at the Pencil Club in Umhlanga last Thursday.

The women pledged to champion the cause by encouraging their spheres of influence to support the movement and raise the funds needed for 10 000 menstrual cups.
This will then be matched, cup for cup, by Move Africa, with the aim of delivering 20 000 cups to schoolgirls across the country.

Founders of Move Africa and The Red Movement, Salt Rock residents Joseph and Lesego Mpyana, are the champions behind the campaign that reached 6 558 girls in 28 schools and 10 NPOs across South Africa during Women’s Month in August last year.
“We dream of giving girls the freedom of a future unrestricted by their menstrual cycles by giving them access to menstrual cups, educating them adequately about their periods, and breaking the stigma associated with periods,” said Lesego.

The menstrual cup is a sustainable and inexpensive feminine hygiene product that lasts up to 10 years and can be a game-changer for young women.
This year Clarins came on board as the offical brand partner.
There are amazing prizes to be won if you support The Red Movement by pledging a cup for R100.
