Ballito skaters take flight
Although weather threatened to dampen the mood, skaters from as far afield as Richards Bay and Maritzburg pulled in for the inaugural skate day at the bowl on Saturday.
Defying gravity and the laws of physics, the North Coast’s best skaters wowed the crowds at the Hilary Drive skate bowl at the weekend.
The event was part of a continued effort to make use of what is now rated a world class facility after massive revamps were undertaken over the past three years.

With skaters of all ages and skill levels allowed to join in on the fun, the skating community again showed its willingness to embrace intergenerational sport in a way that not many other sports can.
“The main goal was to have an enjoyable day first, so it was not your typical skate competition. We wanted everyone to feel as if they were winners,” said co-organiser, Julian Moraitis.
Nevertheless, the level of skating did not suffer and some truly impressive tricks were on display.

While competitive prizes were handed out to the top performers – Thomas Raper scored the best trick up the waterfall and Joshua Falconer for fastest lap – most of the entrants left with something.
“We really want to encourage the guys to carry on skating and get better, so we also made sure to have prizes for those who were willing to push themselves,” Moraitis said.
The funds raised will go towards the maintenance of the bowl.

Driving the Skate Day were Moraitis, Gerrit van Zyl, Brode Vosloo, Hein Abbott and Josh Rogers.
Together, they were able to put on the event and organise prizes, which were sponsored by Slappy Skate Co, Wood Worked, Fallen South Africa, Volcom and Glob Wax.
Be sure to hone your skating skills for the next time an event rolls around at the bowl.
