KwaDukuza comedy master Sthembiso Mtshali is on the roll
The 30-year-old funnyman won the indigenous comedian category at the 2017 South African Traditional Music Awards.
Renowned KwaDukuza comedian Sthembiso Mtshali, popularly known as Hello M, is determined to turn KwaDukuza “into a home of joy and laughter”.
He recently launched his monthly comedy show at the Prince Lounge, every last Thursday of the month.
“I introduced these comedy shows in March, hosting popular comedians such as Felix Hlophe of Gagasi FM, for example,” Sthembiso said.
The purpose of the shows is to offer residents entertainment to help them destress, since we are still recovering from the Covid pandemic and recently the devastating floods.
He said the shows have been well supported.
He believes comedy is in his DNA, and has been making people laugh since he was a schoolboy.
His comedy career officially began in 2009 when he took part in a comedy competition at the KwaDukuza town hall.
“I am now called Hello because during my first performance people did not respond when I greeted them in iSizulu. But when I said ‘hello’, I got their attention.”
Like any other job, being a comedian comes with its own frustrations.
“People often find it hard to believe me even when I am not making a joke.
“They just laugh, even when I am trying to have a serious conversation. I fail to understand why people think one goes around throwing out jokes everywhere you go. There is a time and place for everything.”
