Ineos Grenadier is bigger, badder and on its way
It looks as if the North Coast will have a new contender to rub shoulders with the sea of Toyota and Land Rover heavyweights.
It’s no secret that the Dolphin Coast is home to an assortment of off-road enthusiasts, many of whom who would have been devastated when the original Land Rover Defender was replaced with the new Land Rover Discovery-based 2020 Defender, the modern rendition of what the famous firm believes suits the contemporary bushwhacker.
While most bid the original Defender goodbye, a group of British men sat around a table having a few drinks, toying with the idea of remaking what classic Land Rover fans have always wanted – a real rehashed version of the original Land Rover that mapped the world.
And so today we witness the birth of the Ineos Grenadier, a bespoke, stripped down, utilitarian version of the best ‘4x4xfar’ right on our doorstep.

With 15 000 eager global customers already having placed an order for one, Ineos chairman Jim Ratcliffe’s dream of creating a modern-day bugged-out, simple yet tough-as-nails off-roader was realised in 2017 when that simple conversation spawned the creation of Ineos Automotive.
Only recently available, and starting at a cool R1.4-million, the Grenadier’s powerhouse offers a choice between a BMW straight six petrol or diesel motor, with the petrol unit creating 210kW and 450Nm, and the diesel a more grunt-like 183kW and 550Nm.
Most South Africans will no doubt prefer the reliable diesel, while those intent on longer trips may prefer the higher spinning petrol version.
The Grenadier has been built with versatility and customisation in mind, with flat sides and wide hips hinting at its large load-carrying and towing capability.

With an extensive array of factory fitted kits, pre-packaged accessories and devices, the Grenadier can roll off the line ready to take on the toughest terrain Africa has to offer, and even has an ‘open source’ model with pre-wired electrical points and harnesses ready to be modified to each buyer’s content.
Ineos has assured South Africans that the Grenadier will be looked after professionally through accredited dealers and authorised outlets, and will come with a 5-year/100 000km warranty, a 3-year paint and accessory warranty and even a 12-year anti-perforation warranty for the ladder-frame chassis and other body components.
SMG has been appointed the official home of Ineos Grenadier in South Africa, while customers can order theirs through an online configurator directly from Ineos’ website (www.ineosgrenadier.com).
