The threat of rabies remains high in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and more locally, with four cases identified in iLembe in May alone.
This was revealed in the KZN Department of Agriculture’s most recent rabies alert, with confirmed canine infections in Shaka’s Head, Groutville, Shakaskraal and Mandeni.
Where typically infected animals have been identified in neighbouring eThekwini and King Cetshwayo districts, the threat is now directly on our doorstep.
In 2022 so far, KZN has seen 138 positive cases, split between dogs (129), cows (5), goats (2) and cats (2).
The disease has also been contracted by at least one person in the eThekwini Metro.
The public are urged to avoid picking up strays, and rather call the SPCA or other animal services.
In the case of your own pets, the best protection is prevention and you are encouraged to get all of your pets vaccinated annually and before bringing them into your home.
