Umhlali Saps’ acting station commander believes tackling crime requires an integrated approach

With 31 years of police experience, Moodley said he also wants to divert more resources to rural and township areas such as Nkobongo, Shaka's Head and Etete.

Umhlali Saps’ acting station commander, Colonel Benny Moodley, wants to regain the confidence the community once had in the police.

He said gaining the community’s trust at this stage is a major priority to turn around the crime scourge.

“I strongly believe the community is the police and the police are the community.

“The police alone cannot prevent crime. Only through a joint and concerted partnership will we succeed in defeating the plague,” Col Moodley said.

“Some of my priorities are to tackle the issues of youth crime and gender-based violence, while also improving information-led policing.”

“Rural safety is key as farmers form a vital and sustainable part of the country’s economic development.”

Col Moodley joined Saps in Tongaat as a student in 1991 and received his training at the Chatsworth Training College. His first posting as a constable was at KwaDukuza Saps and in 1992 he was transferred to Umhlali.

“While there I was promoted from constable to captain, and in 2001 promoted to lieutenant colonel and transferred to Alexandra in Gauteng.

“I was then promoted to the rank of colonel in 2014 and appointed as head of Vispol in Alexandra.

“In 2018 I was transferred to the KZN provincial office in Durban and served as the provincial commander of public order policing.”

The following year he was redeployed to Phoenix police as head of Vispol, and in 2020 took up the position of operational coordinator of the iLembe district, serving 10 police stations.

“I am proud that I am currently acting station commander of Saps Umhlali, the birthplace of my policing career.

“I worked under difficult and challenging conditions. My principle objective in the police has always been to build and develop safer communities and thus promote economic growth.

“I believe heavily in partnership policing and the adoption of an integrated approach to tackle crime at all levels,” said Moodley.
