Women take a stand against abuse at Rise Up Movement high tea

Funds raised from the event will go towards the construction of a planned safe house in Umhlali.

Women were empowered with knowledge on preventing and escaping abuse during a Women’s Day high tea held by the Rise Up Movement in Ballito last Tuesday.

About 70 women attended the event, dressed to suit the ‘Colour Me Pretty’ theme.

Funds raised will be used towards the building of a fence for the organisation’s planned safe house in Umhlali.

Founder Josha Daniel said they raised R23 000 and are now R17 000 away from the R50 000 needed for the fence.

Celeste Waugh, Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan, Elma Rabe and Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley at the event.

He thanked sponsors and guest speakers Corinne Durrheim Cornelissen, Colonel Jakie Papayya and guest of honour, Shan Fourie (Mrs South Africa top 25 finalist), for making the event a success.

“Women continue to face atrocities such as sexual assault, domestic violence and murder,” Daniel said, adding that the public were now able to apply online for protection orders and a warrant of arrest for perpetrators was no longer a requirement.

“We hope this will make it easier for women to get help.”
