Clean teams spruce up North Coast streets

Thanks to a partnership between Dolphin Coast Waste Management and KwaDukuza municipality roads from Shakaskraal to Compensation and towards Ballito and Salt Rock are being cleaned of litter with the goal of having the cleanest roads in South Africa.

Noticeably cleaner streets are thanks to a public-private partnership between Dolphin Coast Waste Management (DCWM) and the KwaDukuza municipality.

In the pipeline for several years, the agreement has been fine-tuned, which will see roads from Shakaskraal to Compensation and towards Ballito and Salt Rock swept and cleaned of litter.

“The goal is to ensure roads in the southern parts of KwaDukuza will be some of the cleanest in South Africa,” DCWM CEO Sacha Marot said.

The signing of the agreement was endorsed by the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury.

DCWM staff are already on the ground and elated residents have noticed the difference since the project began early in August.

“So far, the biggest clean-up has been in Shakaskraal. If you drive there today you will not recognise it,” Marot said.

“We have gone beyond the scope of the agreement in many areas. An example would be the concrete gabions which we are replacing at Thompson’s Bay parking lot and the dumped garden waste which we have cleaned up,” he said.

Managing the work is an all-women power team being mentored by DCWM, who will eventually go solo as an Emerging Micro Enterprise (EME).

The team consist of contract manager Tina Chamane, finance officer Gugu Khumalo and health and safety officer Samukelo Mbonambi.

Khumalo originally studied on a bursary from DCWM and like the others has since been mentored by the company for the past two years.

Her mother is a cleaner for the company.

Labour has been sourced locally from Shaka’s Head and Shakaskraal, with 34 jobs created.

DCWM is working with the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct to maintain the maximum road coverage.
