State investigation drags, forcing plea postponement for Ballito mother accused of killing daughter (4)

The state was directed to complete its investigations into the mother accused of drowning her child in a bucket of water by October 21.

The case of a 45-year-old Ballito mother accused of killing her four-year-old daughter in April, was postponed to October 21 to allow the state to complete its investigations.

It is alleged that the woman, who may not be identified by order of the court to protect the identity of her remaining child, tied the girl’s hands and drowned her in a bucket of water before attempting to commit suicide.

She allegedly told police that the child was being difficult.

The woman appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, and prosecutor Raeesa Shaik told the court that two reports were still outstanding – the nail scraping report of the victim and a drug analysis.

She was due to appear on Thursday, but the state failed to bring her to court.

Magistrate Blanche van Eeden asked the investigating officer, warrant officer Bob Pillay, to ensure the accused was transported by a female officer, and that arrangements were made to ensure she did not miss any future court dates.

Her attorney, Alistair Janssens, said he was happy that the state was directed to complete its investigations by October 21.

“We want this matter to be finalised as soon as possible so we can move forward and have offered all the support needed,” said Janssens.

She will remain in custody at Westville prison.
