Ballito recycling champion Sue Beningfield scoops top PETCO award

Litter4Tokens NPC was also named as runners-up at the SEED Awards, acknowledging innovative entrepreneurship.

Ballito resident Sue Beningfield, who heads the Litter4Tokens NPC community recycling initiative in Shaka’s Head, recently received the PETCO community recycling award.

The PETCO awards recognise excellence in reuse, recycling and waste minimisation among businesses, organisations, community groups and individuals within the South African plastic industry.

It also highlights the invaluable contribution residents make to better their communities and the environment.

“We are very excited because this comes with so much exposure and we are always grateful for all the marketing we receive. We are going to open another kiosk in Richard’s Bay and have been requested to open more in Groutville and Etete,” said Beningfield.

She said they are growing all the time and the need is huge. They have about 250 collectors registered, feeding about 1 500 people on a monthly basis in the KwaDukuza area. Collectors exchange their waste for tokens to redeem for food.

A record number of 38 waste bags weighing 453kg collected last year February.

The Litter4Tokens centres are in Shaka’s Head, Driefontein, Nkobongo and Shayamoya.

Litter4Tokens was founded by Clare Swithenbank-Bowman in 2015 to tackle litter, unemployment and lack of food security in Shaka’s Head.

The business has six operational kiosks across three provinces of South Africa. These kiosks formalise waste collection networks in low-income communities and bridge the gap for global brands to purchase from responsible supply chains.

The business aims to have 20 zero-waste kiosks operational across four provinces, creating 40 new entrepreneurs and recovering one million bags of ocean-bound plastic.

Litter4Tokens NPC was also named as runners-up at the SEED Awards, acknowledging innovative entrepreneurship.

Beningfield also featured in a online documentary series called Message in a Bottle.

This documentary provides a behind-the-scenes look at the recycling operations and efforts made by dynamic women.
