Child resuscitated after near-drowning in estate pool

The boy allegedly dived into the pool and knocked his head before falling unconscious.

An 11-year-old boy was resuscitated after a near-drowning incident at a community pool at the Palm Lakes Family Estate clubhouse this afternoon.

Circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, but it is understood that he dived into the pool, knocking his head and falling unconscious (it was later revleaved that the child did not hit his head but got into difficulty while crossing the deep end).

“It is unknown how long he was underwater for, but luckily he was pulled out by onlookers, including a doctor and medic who administered CPR,” said Medi Response KZN spokesperson, Paul Herbst.

It is understood the boy’s pulse had already stopped and he was not breathing by the time he was removed from the pool.

“Upon arrival of paramedics – around 15 minutes after CPR began – the teenager was still unresponsive. Advanced life support intervention and full resuscitation was administered after which he regained his circulation and pulse,” said Herbst.

Once stabilised, the boy was taken to hospital but remained in a critical condition.
