Resuscitated Palm Lakes boy passes away overnight after tragic drowning incident
Eleven-year-old Mvelo was swimming at the Dragonfly Pool when he got into difficulty while crossing the deep end.
Despite the best efforts of all involved to save his life, Mvelo – the 11-year-old boy who was resuscitated after a near-drowning incident at Palm Lakes yesterday – sadly passed away overnight.
Visiting relatives in the estate, Mvelo was swimming at the Dragonfly Pool when he got into difficulty while crossing the deep end.
He did not hit his head while diving in as originally speculated.
“He was swimming towards the steps when he became fatigued and sank underwater. There were other kids in the pool but they were unfortunately not aware of how dangerous the situation was,” said Palm Lakes Estate security manager, Steven Gomes.
Mvelo was underwater for approximately three minutes before being pulled out by bystanders, including a doctor and nurse, who initiated CPR until paramedics arrived.

Medi Response KZN paramedics were able to jump-start circulation and restart the boy’s pulse before he was rushed to hospital.
Unfortunately, it was too late and Mvelo passed away overnight.
“We would like to thank the residents who reacted quickly, pulling him out of the water, commencing and continuing with CPR until the paramedics arrived and did everything they could to try and save him. Their commitment was truly admirable,” said Gomes.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Mvelo’s family, including those whom he was visiting on the estate during the holidays. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time.”
*Note: The original story listed Mvelo’s age as 14, it was in fact 11. His family asked for his surname to be withheld.
