iLembe celebrates significant improvement of district’s matric results

All 121 high schools achieved a pass rate above 50%.

Celebratory ululation filled the hills and mountains as iLembe district’s excellent matric achievements were announced last Friday.

The district recorded a pass rate of 83.9%, a significant rise from the 75.7% mark seen the previous year and 76.9% in 2020.

Despite the lack of resources, the rural schools performed better than most of the township and semi-urban schools in the district.

Isinyabusi High School in Gingindlovu claimed first position, while Inhlokozi High School in Maphumulo was acknowledged for obtaining a 100% rate since 2018.

None of the 121 high schools in the district recorded a zero pass rate or lower than 50%, and only five schools fell within the 50% to 60% bracket.

iLembe district education director, Dr Musawenkosi Madondo, walked tall and could not hide his joy about the provincial matric results.

“We now aim for an 85% minimum and hopefully a 90% pass rate this year. We had 25 schools with a 100% pass rate and we, of course, hope to grow this number,” said Madondo.

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca said with the 8.2% improvement, history had been made.

“We are excited that KwaZulu-Natal achieved an outcome of 83%. The iLembe district was also listed among the top 20 of best-performing districts and number five in the province.

“The class of 2022 truly exceeded our expectations by demonstrating their mettle under the added pressures of the April 2022 disaster and loadshedding. They successfully carried the burden on their shoulders,” said Nhaca.

She said the results also served as a true testament of the dedication and leadership of the teachers. She commended the education department, parents and other stakeholders who contributed towards the success of the district.

“We have been assured these results will become commonplace and the district will continue to be a formidable force in the province. We therefore have good reason to raise our fists and beat the drum in celebration of the positive outcomes,” she said.

She congratulated the two KwaDukuza schools, Lethithemba High and Mbekamuzi Combined School for obtaining a 100% pass rate.

“I wish to encourage all those who made it through to utilise our annual financial assistance programme which offers R8 000 towards individuals’ studies,” said Nhaca.
