Rewriting matric, Darnall’s Precious Shezi (23) bags university access and four distinctions
While at school, she tutored other pupils, something that served to strengthen her belief that pursuing a teaching career was the right decision.

After not earning high enough grades to qualify for university admission in 2017, 23-year-old Precious Shezi swallowed her pride and returned to school – bagging herself a Bachelor’s degree pass and four distinctions.
A resident of Darnall’s Zamani township, Precious originally secured only a diploma pass four years ago at Hambisanani High.
When no university would accept her she eventually realised she had to bite the bullet and start over in Grade 10.
“It was not an easy decision, but I was determined to change my life and get a teaching degree.
“Being embarrassed was not going to get me anywhere. To minimise the pressure and eyes on me, I chose to attend a Durban school, Dick Ndlovu High School,” said Precious.
This made it easier for her to concentrate on her mission.
“What also motivated me was having some of my family and friends joining me in going back to school. This made me eager to do well because these were people who looked up to me. I had to show them that one can restart and do well,” said Precious.
While at school, she tutored other pupils, something that served to strengthen her belief that pursuing a teaching career was the right decision.
“I enjoy helping others learn and it brings me great joy to see someone who was struggling with schoolwork suddenly gaining understanding and pass the subject. It’s a feeling I do not want to walk away from.”
