One Ocean Expedition theme song composed by KwaDukuza musician [Watch]

Dane Francis and pupils from Berea Primary School performed the song for the ship's crew, as well as government officials and representatives of the United Nations.

KwaDukuza musician Dane Francis has composed and produced the theme song for the United Nations’ global One Ocean Expedition.

The popular musician, composer and producer said living on the Dolphin Coast which boasts beautiful beaches, inspired him to create awareness about preserving our oceans through the medium of music.

Titled One World, One Ocean, the song was performed on board the Norwegian tall ship, Statsraad Lehmkuhl, in Cape Town on January 16.

The One Ocean Expedition is a circumnavigation of the planet by the ship with the goal of bringing attention to and sharing knowledge of the crucial role played by the ocean.

During a 2022 beach clean-up initiative, Francis pitched the idea of a theme song to Berea Primary School, which shares a relationship with Bergen University in Norway.

When they heard the song, they were sold on the idea.

“I have always been a passionate musician, but being able to use music to create awareness for children on the global issue of preserving our oceans is truly special,” he said.

“Producing One World, One Ocean and having the opportunity to perform it together with the amazing pupils was a memorable experience.”

Francis and the pupils performed the song for the ship’s crew, as well as government officials and representatives of the United Nations.

The Statsraad Lehmkuhl arrived in Cape Town last month for the expedition’s final port of call. It set sail in 2021 and has completed 55 000 nautical miles.

The research vessel carried several students who collected information on carbon dioxide exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere, ocean acidification, as well as the impact humanity has on the ocean.

The research will be published in a variety of scientific journals.
