Father and son shot in brazen attempted robbery of KwaDukuza clothing store

Five of the six suspects have since been arrested, with local Saps and security services searching for the sixth.

A father and son were shot at Giorgio’s Clothing Store in central KwaDukuza this morning, with the son later airlifted to a Durban hospital.

Five of the six suspects have since been arrested, with local Saps and security services searching for the sixth.

At around 11.30am, the six armed robbers targeted the store across from the KwaDukuza municipal buildings on the corner of King Shaka and Chief Albert Luthuli streets.

It is understood three of the men entered the store while two stood watch outside and a driver sat waiting in a getaway car.

The store owners, a man estimated to be in his 60s and his son, estimated to be in his 30s, were both shot during the attempted robbery.

“The son was in critical condition when paramedics responded and after he was stabilised, was airlifted to a suitable Durban hospital. The father’s moderate wounds were more superficial and he was privately transported to a hospital in Tongaat,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.

Owing to quick response from KwaDukuza security services, KwaDukuza Saps and the KwaDukuza Crime Prevention Forum (CPF), it is understood nothing was stolen.

“Security services were quickly alerted and were able to detain one of the suspects on scene while the other five initially escaped,” said K9 Security Services CEO, Sooraj Maharaj.

One of the suspects was later apprehended on foot in the industrial area.

The three who sped off in the car were caught soon after when they got stuck in traffic near the KwaDukuza Mall, with the fourth later found on foot in the industrial area.

“It is because the crime-fighting elements worked as a unified force that we were able to achieve such quick results. All the teams that responded worked together and that is how it needs to continue,” said KwaDukuza CPF chairman, Salim Tootla.

KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson, Constable Siphesihle Myeni, confirmed that two firearms had also been recovered, with cases of business robbery and attempted murder under investigation.

All five suspects are in Saps custody.
