Runaway truck causes havoc on Umhlanga M41 [Watch]

Miraculously, no deaths have been reported in the 30+ car pile-up.

The driver of the truck reportedly came to a standstill further down along the M41, after rolling down the side of the road.

Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue said the driver had been treated for moderate injuries.

ORIGINAL STORY

An out-of-control truck ploughed through early morning traffic along the M41 near Gateway, seeing about 30 other vehicles involved in the accident.

Medical personnel are still at the scene treating those injured, with reports indicating that 22 patients are currently being assessed.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said according to reports the truck driver lost control and ploughed into traffic.

“Many patients had been transported privately to hospital prior to the arrival of emergency services,” Herbst said.

IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick said they were unable to confirm the exact number of injured.

“There are however no reported deaths at this time.”

A Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance arrived at the scene to airlift a critical patient to a medical facility, while IPSS Medical Rescue took two other critically injured people to hospital.

The road between Umhlanga Ridge and the M4 has been closed, causing severe traffic disruption.
