An explosion of colour comes to Townsend Park

From traditional dances, an assortment of stalls to be enjoyed and attendees throwing dyed powder on each other, the Hindu festival of colours proved a hit.

Ballito Hindu Dharma Sabha’s (BHDS) first colour fest was a massive hit at Townsend Park this past weekend, drawing more than 100 people for the vibrant celebration.

It was held in honour of Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, which will be celebrated across the globe on Wednesday this week.

Aside from the main event, during which attendees threw dyed powder on each other, guests were also entertained by traditional dances and a number of stallholders and other activities.

“We are grateful to see how many people came to support the first event and hope it will become an annual celebration. We called it a colour fest rather than Holi so that people of all religions and cultures felt welcome,” said BHDS chairperson, Sanjay Raghubir.

The organisation was established six years ago and counts a membership of more than 200 in Ballito alone.

Founded in the Hindu religion, it promotes culture and education by hosting camps and programmes for children.

“The colour fest was not a fundraiser, but we do host other fundraising events throughout the year. These funds go partially towards outreach, but our long-term goal is to purchase a piece of land in Ballito where we could build a cultural centre,” he said.
