“No need to panic,” says Ballito Neighbourhood Watch as EFF’s national shutdown looms

Motorists advised to steer clear from being on the roads and avoid major town and city centres on Monday.

Local community safety groups do not believe residents need fear any immediate threats during the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) proposed national shutdown on Monday.

Key roleplayers met with the Ballito community policing forum (CPF) and the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) on Wednesday evening

The CPF, BNW and a number of security companies also attended a meeting with local police earlier that day.

According to the BNW, local EFF officials have indicated their intention to protest peacefully.

The Dolphin Coast, KwaDukuza and Isiqalokuhle (Tongaat) taxi assoications will operate as per usual, while additional police resources will be made available with back-up from the Public Order Policing Unit, if needed.

It was highlighted that local CPF and BNW members will increase patrols, acting as the eyes and ears for authorities and local security.

The BNW reiterated there was no information available which would suggest the need for panic.

“There is no need for residents to get overly concerned about the protest on Monday.

“But try to steer clear from being on the roads and stay away from major towns and city centres where possible,” said BNW chairperson, Morné Steffens.

“For the taxi associations it will be business as usual, but it is up to you whether you run your business or require your staff to attend work on Monday,” he said.

Steffens did warn of the likelihood of staff being intimidated and prevented from heading to work.

“There is a big commitment from all security and safety organisations in our area to be visible and ready for any eventuality,” he reassured.

Steffens also urged people to refrain from sharing messages via WhatsApp which are sure to start escalating in the build-up to the protest, especially where propaganda was concerned.

Leader of the EFF Julius Malema reported that the national shutdown would go ahead as planned and be non-violent.

The EFF have called for the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa and an end to loadshedding, among other demands.
