EFF national shutdown sees sporadic protest action in KwaDukuza
At least 24 300 tyres strategically placed for acts of criminality were confiscated countrywide, police say.
Business has mostly continued as usual despite threats of a countrywide shutdown by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) today.
Protests flared up in a few city centres around the country, but police have intervened and dispersed the protesters.
The EFF is demanding an end to loadshedding and the resignation of president Cyril Ramaphosa.
In KwaDukuza, the R102 was closed at Melville and Ntshawini due to protest action.
Debris is now being removed by Saps and the fire department.
There have also been some disturbances on the R74 from KwaDukuza towards Maphumulo where the road is closed near Kwajim Hardware and also at KwaMxhosa.
There were also reports of a road closure at Driefontein this morning.

KwaDukuza police spokesperson, constable Siphesihle Myeni, confirmed all other roads in KwaDukuza were open and safe to travel on as of 10.30am.
“When travelling between Ballito and KwaDukuza town we recommend drivers use the N2 as road closures along the R102 are anticipated during the day,” said Myeni.
Taxis continue to operate unhindered.
Law enforcement officers, through the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints), have in the last 12 hours arrested 87 protesters across the country for public violence related offences.
Natjoints comprises of various government departments led by the State Security Agency (SSA), South African Police Service (Saps) and South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The group meets regularly to assess the safety and security of the country.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Natjoints, together with the respective Provjoints, have been monitoring the situation closely to prevent and combat any acts of lawlessness and criminality.
“Of the 87 arrested, 41 were arrested in Gauteng, 29 in North West, 15 in the Free State. There are also arrests in other provinces such as Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.
“Updates will be provided as and when information becomes available,” said Mathe.
He said at least 24 300 tyres strategically placed for acts of criminality were confiscated. Of these, 6 000 were seized in the Western Cape, 4 500 in the Free State, 3 600 in Gauteng, 1 513 in the Eastern Cape and a few in other provinces.
