KwaDukuza traffic officer seriously injured in hit-and-run incident in Shakaskraal

The driver of the vehicle lost control while fleeing from the scene and was arrested.

A motorist was arrested for a hit-and-run incident after he allegedly knocked down a KwaDukuza traffic officer in Shakaskraal today.

Officer Samuel Moonsamy and colleagues were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the R102 when the car in question failed to stop and knocked him down.

The driver allegedly sped off and lost control of his vehicle and was arrested.

KwaDukuza municipality spokesperson, Sipho Mkhize, said Moonsamy is currently in hospital and said the matter would now be investigated by the police.

Dylan Meyrick of the IPSS Medical Rescue said the traffic officer sustained serious injuries and after being stabilised on scene was transported to a hospital under the care of an advanced life support paramedic.

Umhlali police spokesperson said a case of reckless and negligent was opened and police are investigating.

Moonsamy’s incident comes months after assistant superintendent Colin Zulu died after he was struck by a car during a roadblock on the R102 between Darnall and Stanger in December.

This after superintendent Eddie Boaventura was shot and killed on the N2 by a group of robbers while he was on duty in November.

He pulled them over because of their erratic driving, unaware they were fleeing from a robbery they committed at KwaDukuza Mall.
