Downward dog to puppy play at inaugural North Coast puppy yoga event
Even the most hardcore yoga practitioners could not help but stop for a few minutes when a puppy came their way.
Exercise met absolute joy when 61 people joined the inaugural North Coast puppy yoga event on Saturday morning.
Hosted at Sugar Rush Park, the event was a collaboration between Secret Sunrise Durban and the SAFE Foster Network.
The attending yogis got a chance to follow the class through Secret Sunrise earphones, led by Michela Casasola, all while a bunch of SAFE puppies milled around and played with them.
Even the most hardcore yoga practitioners could not help but stop for a few minutes when a puppy came their way.
The event had previously been held three times in Hillcrest, but Saturday was the first time it had reached North Coast shores.
“We have loved being part of these events. Aside from the enjoyment it obviously brings, it also helps to socialise the puppies which is good for future adoption,” said SAFE Foster Network director, Kerry Janke.
SAFE, which stands for Saving Animals Through Fostering and Education, is an animal welfare organisation that operates across the wider Durban area.
They are active in helping to decrease stray populations, while promoting pet adoption and undertaking sterilisation programmes.
“Our biggest costs are vet bills and food. Entry for the puppy yoga events includes a bag of pet food, all of which goes back to the animals,” said Janke.
She thanked Pet Shop Science Ballito for their ongoing support of SAFE.
There is no official date for the next local puppy yoga class, but SAFE is targeting early next year.
Keep an eye out for details on their social platforms.
