M4 Tongaat River bridge set to reopen this December

The bridge is anticipated to reopen for use no later than December 19, but may be opened as soon as December 14.

It’s all systems go for the reopening of the M4 Tongaat River bridge next month.

Repairs of the bridge, damaged by floods in April last year, are being undertaken by Raubex Group subsidiary company, Cape Town-based Empa Structures, who were appointed after several failed tender attempts.

The contract value is R54 million. Repair crews have been on site since July.

iLembe Chamber CEO, Cobus Oelofse has been monitoring progress at the bridge.

He said fears of a steel manufacturing delay had been put to rest.

The bridge has also been successfully jacked back into its original position.

Further to the south of the bridge, where a separate portion of the M4 suffered substantial slippage, repair efforts are well underway.

Oelofse said the Chamber had been reassured that work on this repair would be completed on time. Should this not be the case, Oelofse said it would not affect the reopening of the highway.

The bridge is anticipated to reopen for use no later than December 19, but may be opened as soon as December 14.
