R44-million makeover at Sibaya

Significant revamps have also been completed in the casino and Imbizo Conference Centre.

Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom now boasts a five-star hotel where you can rest your head after an evening of fun.

The Royal Sibaya Hotel headlines a recently completed R44-million refurbishment which has added to the overall feel of the resort.

It also includes upgrades to the three-star Sibaya Lodge and Salon Privé (private gambling area), as well as the addition of the popular Beira Alta restaurant chain.

In conjunction with Sibaya’s 19th anniversary this month, the Courier was invited to stay at the 36-room hotel and see the upgrades first-hand.

The rooms are modern with cool tones and clean lines, while still retaining the traditional interior touches that have come to be synonymous with Sibaya.

Bursts of colour come through in playful animal-themed art pieces from Durban artist Khumkanikazi Dlamini, while simple comforts and tech conveniences are easily found.

“The climate is humid, so we have created an environment of refreshing spaces,” said interior designer David Muirhead.

All rooms, including those at the 118-room lodge, have sea, pool or garden views and offer easy access to the main entertainment and casino area.

In the lodge, the art comes by way of Charles Johnson photographs that add to a feeling of cost-conscious comfort.

Significant makeovers have also been done in the casino and Imbizo Conference Centre.

“Loyal casino punters will enjoy the upgrades to the Salon Privé bar and lounge area, which has a twinkling gold African tree – named the ‘Tree of Life’ – as its main focal point that exudes a sense of African glamour,” said Muirhead.

The amenities available lend themselves to large business groups and conferences, as well as those looking to ride their luck for a weekend or two.

The main casino floor is surrounded by a number of restaurants at differing price points, from takeaways to quality options such as the newly opened Beira Alta.

“Our recipes are handed down from generation to generation and have evolved into Portuguese cuisine with an African influence,” said Beira Alta Sibaya owner, Laurindo Lagoa.

There are a host of full-portioned, zesty Portuguese dishes on offer which will satisfy even the most spice-forward palates.
