Glendale Valley bikers rev up Christmas spirit

Out of all the items handed out, soccer balls proved to be the most popular among the youth.

“Nazi izithuthu! (here come the motorbikes),” shouted the Glendale Valley kids.

But last Friday was different. The “izithuthu” were not just roaring by as they usually do. but stopped to deliver all sorts of treats and soccer balls for Christmas.

The Glendale bikers group of more than 200 members ride through the hills of Glendale Valley almost every weekend.

Soccer balls thrown out along the way were quickly seized.

It would be a lie to say the engine noise and damage they cause on pathways do not irritate some residents. But the community remains accommodating of the “abelungu bezithuthu” (white people on bikes), and the bikers felt the need to show their appreciation for being allowed to ride freely in their area.

The group, with the support of their friends and family, handed out about 15 000 sanitary pads for girls which were donated by the Simbithi Golf Club, Palm Lakes ladies and a group who call themselves the Swim Babes.

Uncle Bill Yeo and “Mr Dog” Lee Ramsden ready to distribute Christmas gifts to the Glendale community.

They also distributed 25kg staple food packs, hygiene products and sweet treats for the children.

Funds to buy the hampers were donated by the Glendale enduro riders.

“Without the support of the community we would not be able to continue riding in the area, so it is important we maintain good relations as well as give back to them,” said long-serving member Lee Ramsden.

Soccer balls were a prized possession among the youth.

“We do this every year and are now also planning a winter run to distribute blankets and other warm items among the community.”

The excitement and appreciation from the residents was heartwarming.

Out of all the items handed out, soccer balls proved to be the most popular among the youth.

Apart from the kids pleading for one, gogos also got in on the action, making sure to get a ball on behalf of their grandchildren.
