Umhlali police scammer returns
It is exactly the same modus operandi reported by the Courier in April this year and October last year, and it is suspected to be the same person behind the scam.
A scam artist posing as an Umhlali police captain is again making the rounds.
The man, who calls himself ‘Captain Naidoo’, has tapped a number of businesses for ‘donations’ under the guise of doing work for the community.
Once the funds are transferred via mobile banking or e-Wallet, the scammer disappears and is never heard from again – until he comes back for more!
It is exactly the same modus operandi reported by the Courier in April this year and October last year, and it is suspected to be the same person behind the scam.
This time around it is the medical community that has been targeted, with dentists and doctors reportedly called on for donations.
The scam is playing on the prominent role played by the legitimate Captain Vinny Pillay of Umhlali police station, who also makes occasional requests for donations for legitimate community outreach purposes.
“Any requests I make will be in writing or in person. Never trust someone over the phone,” said Captain Pillay.
A separate scam sees the same person impersonating Umhlali Saps’ designated firearms officer and promising to expedite firearms licenses for cash.
If you have information on either of the scams, contact Umhlali Saps at 032 947 9900.
