Durban hikers say they love walking the coastline at Ballito
Early risers joined Roland Smith for a breathtaking 6km coastal trek from Willard Beach to Salt Rock.
An early morning wake-up proved well worth it for 17 beach hikers last Sunday morning.
The group, led by Roland Smith of Durban Hiking & Adventures, took on around 6km of walking, rock-hopping and water-avoiding between Willard Beach and Salt Rock.
It proved a perfect morning for activity, as a mild wind tempered the beautiful summer sun.
The ‘Rocky Shore Walk’ is just one of a number of tours that Smith leads across KwaZulu-Natal.
You can typically find him on the North Coast once or twice a month, with the night version of Sunday’s hike a popular choice.
Smith calls the route his signature hike and groups are often able to spot a wide array of critters and creatures in the many tidal pools that are passed in the three hours or so of walking.
“It’s all about reconnecting with nature,” said Smith.
“Getting people to put their feet in the sand and interact with the world around them is ultimately what I’m trying to promote.”
Smith was born in Durban but grew up in Hungary, just outside Budapest.
He returned to South Africa at 21 and has spent time in many places around the country, including a year-and-a-half in Ballito before settling in Durban North.
He founded Durban Hiking & Adventures just over a year ago and it has since grown to the point where he’s leading multiple tours a week.
