At an event hosted at King Shaka, the airport police lit candles for and called the names of five KwaZulu-Natal officers who had died in the line of duty since 2020.

King Shaka Saps spokesperson, warrant officer Valery Govender.

The officers honoured were lieutenant colonel MJ Mayende, captain D Singh, warrant officer M Khwela, sergeant EP Zuma and sergeant MT Myeza.

“We salute the policemen and women of our country on their special day,” said airport Saps spokesperson, warrant officer Valery Govender.

Station commanders from various local Saps branches attended the event.

“Our police officers work tirelessly, at times facing great danger and threats to their lives, to maintain public order and a crime-free society. We appreciate the sacrifices and urge all in our country to support the police in their work.”

National Police Day was first gazetted in 2005 and falls on January 27.

It started as a way to remember the sacrifices made by police officers across the country and is closely observed within the policing community.
