Siza Water’s R2m bursary boosts local youth education

iLembe district mayor Thobani Shandu commended the programme for producing students in fields which need more skilled graduates.

Siza Water is propelling local youth to access higher levels of education with a robust R2-million plus spent in bursary funding.

The bursary funds students from the Siza Water concession area who wish to pursue tertiary studies ranging from accountancy to engineering.

The company held its annual bursary breakfast last Friday where managing director Shyam Misra welcomed the new bursary recipients and commended returning students for working hard to achieve good results.

The success of the bursary programme is measured by the accomplishments of its recipients, said Misra.

“The success of this funding is not in the ability to give money away, but in what the fund has produced.

“The fund has been able to actively change lives of the youth,” he said.

BSc civil engineering graduate from UKZN, Shivaadon Poonan (21) has been a recipient of the bursary for the past four years and is now an employed young engineer.

“Programmes like this really make a difference, not only in iLembe but in South Africa as a whole. Having the bursary forced me to stay in control. Make sure to maximise the use of it,” he urged his peers.

Recent programme graduate Shivaadon Poonan addressed the new class of bursary recipients.

iLembe district mayor Thobani Shandu commended the Siza Water bursary scheme for granting deserving students an opportunity to pursue essential career choices.

“We need young leaders who can invest in the economic development of our country. We appreciate Siza Water’s bursary initiative because government alone cannot fund students adequately,” he said.

Bursary recipients get an opportunity to work with Siza Water during tertiary holidays.
