Weather service warns of heavy winds this afternoon

The yellow level 2 (minor) warning is in place from 2pm-8pm.

Heavy winds are expected to rake most of the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast this afternoon between 2pm and 8pm.

This is according to a yellow level 2 (minor) wind warning issued by the South African Weather Service earlier today.

An approaching cold front from the south-west will create a ‘steep pressure gradient’ which brings with it strong winds.

A yellow level 2 warning indicates a high likelihood of the event happening and low likelihood of damage.

Average windspeeds of between 20-30 knots (37-55km/h) and highs of 35-40 knots (64-74km/h) are expected between Durban and Richard’s Bay.

Potential impacts include:

  • Damage to roads with crosswinds and fallen objects.
  • Localised disruption to ports and difficulty in navigation for small vessels.
  • Localised damage of temporary structures across the coastline.
  • Coastal communities affected by spray.
