No end in sight for parched residents of KwaDukuza’s Groutville township
Residents have had dry taps for over a year, daily routines now include them fetching water from two to three kilometers away from their homes.
Residents of Charlottedale in Groutville have lost patience after struggling with water issues since last year.
Situated near the Phaphama Tuck Shop, resident Nkosinathi Zungu said at least 100 houses were affected in his area.
What exacerbated the situation for him was that five weeks ago iLembe District Municipality workers dug up his driveway intending to find and fix the problem.
“It has been a month now, they just left my driveway and yard dug up and never returned. No explanation was given to me, and there’s no indication of when water will be restored in our area.

I am now left with no access to my yard. I have a traditional function to host shortly and I don’t know how I will enter my home,” said Zungu.
He said the last time they had water was on December 24 when a water tanker visited the area.
Currently, they have to carry water or use wheelbarrows to fetch water from two to three kilometres away.
“There’s been no solid explanation given to us as residents about the lack of water in our area. It would be great to know when we will get water and when they will fix my driveway.
Children have found a playground in these trenches left uncovered by iLembe employees, which I find dangerous,” said Zungu.
iLembe Municipality had not responded at the time of publication.
